Pretoria - Mamelodi Sundowns caretaker coaches Neil Tovey and Miguel Gamondi have given club boss Patrice Motsepe plenty to think about over the festive season.
Tovey and Gamondi were given two matches to put the team back on track for the title after Brazillian coach Angel Cappa resigned last week.
Motsepe was due to announce Cappa's replacement in the new year. But the men in control have put their hands up in a big way. Motsepe should consider keeping the Tovey-Gamondi combination which looks to be a real winning one.
The two have succeeded beyond the club's wildest dreams.
Downs go into the break on top of the Premiership after beating Black Leopards 5-1 last weekend and routing Dynamos 4-0 with 10 men in Giyani on Wednesday night.
"We have certainly thrown the cat among the pigeons. I would love to continue working with the players. I believe we have shown in the past two games what can be achieved. The spirit is back and the players are now believing in themselves," said Tovey.
What was most remarkable about beating Dynamos so convincingly was the fact that defender Oscar Ntwagae was sent off in the 15th minute.
"We played for 75 minutes with 10 men and still won 4-0. I reckon that speaks volumes for the players' attitude and fighting spirit," said Tovey.
Downs go into the two-month break with 37 points from 19 matches.
They have one more point than second placed Orlando Pirates who played an extra match.
"I am delighted to be top of the league. But I am not so happy with the long layoff due to the African Nations Cup finals. I would have liked to continue playing and keep the momentum going."
