  • Pula - German coach Juergen Klinsmann says he wants strong competition within his squad for first-team places at the upcoming World Cup, which kicks off on June 9 when hosts Germany take on Costa Rica in their opening Group A match.

"I would have a team in my head if the match was tomorrow but it could look different on June 9," said Klinsmann at his team's training camp in Sardinia.

"Each player has to reach his best level. Those ones who think they're second choice have the challenge to put those in front of them (in the pecking order) under pressure.

"There has to be competition for places throughout the entire World Cup. Nobody can relax for a minute."

Klinsmann admitted that he team would not be the most talented at the World Cup and that they would have to rely on German virtues such as hard work, team spirit and a never-say-die attitude.

"We don't have a team like (defending champions) Brazil, that is made up of 20 individuals," said Klinsmann. "We can only achieve something if we all work together."
