  • Liverpool - Rafael Benitez has indicated that Liverpool could be the next Premiership club to be subject to a foreign takeover after the manager confirmed he has been made aware of contact between the club and prospective overseas buyers.

The Merseyside club has been actively seeking new investment for over two years and has attracted recent interest from prospective buyers from Canada and Dubai.

Frank Gillett, the owner of the Canadian ice hockey team, the Montreal Canadians, and previously the owner the Harlem Globetrotters, is believed to be one of the interested parties along with the Dubai international capital group headed by Samurai Ansari.

The Liverpool board, who are growing increasingly anxious to attract new funds to finance the planned development of a new stadium scheduled to begin next year, will discuss the matter at a board meeting on Thursday

But on the day that West Ham United announced they are to have new Icelandic owners, Benitez, who is preparing his side for Tuesday's Champions League group game with PSV Eindhoven, insisted he was unaffected by the potential boardroom changes.

"The board will do what is best for the club," Benitez said.

"I have been given some information but I am not worried about this situation. There are people interested but that is normal for such a big club. This is not something I can control so I don't think about it."
