  • London - Former England captain David Beckham will not be offered a new contract with Real Madrid and will leave the club, media reported on Wednesday.

"Beckham will leave us. We will not renew his contract," the club's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic was quoted as saying by various media.

"Beckham's contract was not renewed," Predrag Mijatovic told Italian TV station Sky TG 24.

However, it wasn't clear whether Mijatovic meant the decision was final or whether contract talks were still alive.

Beckham's four-year contract expires at the end of this season. Mijatovic said on Tuesday that the club wanted Beckham to decide by next week whether he will accept a two-year contract extension.

Beckham has been stalling on the offer due to his lack of first-team opportunities under coach Fabio Capello this season. He has started only seven of 25 matches.

But Real Madrid's director of communications Gaspar Rosety told Reuters: "Predrag Mijatovic has not spoken to Sky Italia and has made no such comments about Beckham's contract."

Real have been offering the 31-year-old midfielder a two-year extension to his current deal, which ends in June, but said they wanted Beckham to make a quick decision on his future so they can plan for next season.

As of Jan1, Beckham has been free to talk to other clubs with teams in England, Italy and the United States interested in signing him.
