Catania stadium shut down
14/02/2007 16:03 - (SA)
Rome - A sports judge has ordered the Catania's Angelo Massimino stadium to shut down, ruling that the Serie A team play the remainder of this season's matches in neutral venues and behind closed doors.
Judge Gianpaolo Tosel ruled the Sicilian club's responsibility for the violence that led to the February 2 killing of 38-year-old policeman Filippo Raciti was "unequivocal."
Tosel said the danger of a repeat of the killing during rioting at the arena two weeks ago "put public safety at risk for the rest of the sporting season."
Tosel also fined Catania about $65 000.
Raciti died after being hit by a blunt object as fans clashed with police inside and outside the stadium during a league game against rivals Palermo. About 100 people were injured.
At least 38 people have been arrested, including 15 minors and a 17-year-old Italian is under investigation for murder.
