Johannesburg - South African fans hoping for a quick return to the national team by Benni McCarthy will likely have to wait a little longer.
The free-scoring striker is in no rush to return to international duty, has not yet spoken to national coach Carlos Alberto Parreira and is calling for other South African strikers to step up to the plate.
McCarthy (29) says he believes it is time for new strikers to be developed by the national side so that the reliance on him is ended.
Earlier this month Parreira said he was confident that McCarthy would soon return to the team.
In naming his PSL squad on Thursday to play Swaziland in a training game at Ellis Park on Tuesday night, he said he hoped McCarthy would return sometime this year.
But the Blackburn Rovers striker does not want to play in next year's Nations Cup finals, which fall in January and February and will come at the business end of the English season.
He is, therefore, loath to make a comeback over the next 12 months, although is still keen on a chance at playing in the 2010 World Cup finals.
McCarthy has made a favourable impression at Blackburn, who are now seeking to offer him an extension to his contract, which ends in mid-2010.
McCarthy has scored 18 goals in 34 starts and three sub appearances in league and cup action for Blackburn this season.
Parreira said on Thursday that his PSL squad would not receive caps but it was the first step towards building a team for 2010.
