Johannesburg - Benni McCarthy was back in South Africa at the weekend while the Bafana Bafana side were in Chad.
The 29-year-old was making a new advert for his boot sponsor Nike and flew out of the country on Tuesday night, back to Blackburn Rovers and negotiations over a possible one-year extension to his contact.
McCarthy has also been linked with a possible move away from the English Premier league club because of a clause that allows him to move if Blackburn receive an offer of 7.5m Euros (about R75m) or more for the player.
With 18 goals this season, McCarthy has been linked with his boyhood heroes, Manchester United.
Last season, Blackburn lost Welsh international Craig Bellamy to Liverpool in similar fashion. But it proved profitable for Rovers and this could also be the case if they lose McCarthy. They paid R50m for the Capetonian's move from FC Porto.
"If the big clubs want you, they will get you," said McCarthy. "If a big club offers Blackburn the money, then of course I'm interested," he added.
But McCarthy has again praised the influence of Blackburn manager Mark Hughes. "He was always my hero when he was a player. He was the striker I modelled my game on and I was big fan of his. Now I am working alongside him on the training ground. I think he could become a second Jose Mourinho."
