Johannesburg - Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira is to fly back to Brazil on Sunday and will be away for at least a month as he undergoes a second knee operation in a matter of months, Daily Sun can exclusively reveal.
Parreira is to undergo surgery on a knee ligament problem. The 64-year-old coach had an operation last November. But within 24 hours of his discharge from hospital, he turned on the knee again and has been in pain since.
He consulted doctors in Johannesburg last month but has elected to return home and undergo surgery again.
The break means Parreira will miss all the PSL action for the month of April and is likely only to return for the closing weeks of the PSL season in May.
His next international will be at the Cosafa Castle Cup, where Bafana Bafana are due to play in Swaziland on the weekend of May 26-27.
The national side meet traditional foe Malawi in the semi-final on May 26 and will play either Mauritius or Swaziland the next day.
Safa have been seeking to change this date to avoid a potential clash with the final of the Absa Cup but Parreira has said he is happy to play as it will come just a week before the return match against Chad on June 2.
Billy Cooper reports Parreira refused to make any excuses for Wednesday's 1-0 defeat by Bolivia at Ellis Park.
It was a match Bafana should have won. Anyone could see that!
There were plenty of excuses Parreira could have used.
But instead he shouldered the blame - if there was any - and once again stressed he is building a team for 2010.
Parreira said: "I hate losing. But in this case I am satisfied with my players. They have the right attitude and commitment. I knew Bolivia would be a good test for us."
Parreira said that his players had learnt a lot from the game.
"Bolivia were faster from defence to midfield and also showed us how to defend a 1-0 lead. They had one chance - a rare mistake - and scored. We had countless chances. But this is only the beginning."
Parreira said he had asked Safa to allow the squad to go into a camp in Brazil in July.
