Johannesburg - South African adults are generally confident that the 2010 Soccer World Cup will be a success, a Markinor survey released on Wednesday has found.
While 45% of the population are confident in South Africa's ability to host the football extravaganza, 42% believe that the country's national team, Bafana Bafana, will reach the quarter-finals, said Markinor of the survey conducted across the country in November 2006.
Black South Africans had the most faith in South Africa's ability while whites were the least optimistic race group.
Soccer fans were more assured about the country's readiness to host the event. Soccer seemed to be the sport of choice for South Africans with more than a third of the population, 36%, preferring it to both cricket and rugby.
Face-to-face interviews with 3 500 people were conducted to assess the confidence the country had in its national team.
Almost half of the country's black population, 47%, believed that Bafana Bafana would perform well, while a third each of Indians and coloureds believed Bafana Bafana would make it to the quarter-finals.
Three out of five whites, 58%, were of the opinion that Bafana Bafana would not progress to the quarter-finals.
The research was conducted as part of Markinor's quarterly KayaBus and TeleBus surveys.
