PSL TV rights saga continues
19/07/2007 12:43 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The contents of the urgent interdict filed by the SABC freezing the Premier Soccer League-Supersport match broadcasting rights deal were still being studied, the PSL said on Thursday.
"The documents are still with our legal team who are busy analysing them. They have not told us what the interdict really means," said PSL spokesperson Ntambi Ravele.
She could not say if the interdict would delay the start of the league season which is scheduled to begin early next month.
SABC spokesperson Kaiser Kganyago refused to confirm that the public broadcaster had filed such documents.
"I still need to talk to the head of the negotiating team to allow me to talk about the matter," said Kganyago.
Last month, the PSL announced that SuperSport had been awarded a R1bn contract to broadcast PSL soccer matches for the next five years.
An arbitration process dealing with the dispute over the awarding of the contract hangs in the air.
The arbitration could potentially overturn the decision to allow SuperSport broadcast rights to the PSL soccer games.
The move to award the contract to SuperSport sparked a heated public debate.
It was argued that most people could not afford pay television, and would therefore be denied television coverage of one of South Africa's most popular sports.
The concerned parties had held talks on several occasion in an attempt to solve the dispute but no resolution has been found.
