Green light for 2010 stadiums
29/08/2007 17:49 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Labour inspectors agreed on Wednesday to allow construction on parts of the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban and the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town to continue.
Labour officials earlier halted operations over safety concerns at the Durban stadium.
Prohibition notices were served on the contractors, halting operations on certain parts of the site, due to unsafe scaffolding, an unsafe welding machine, an excavator and a tower crane.
The stadium will reportedly host five first-round and one second-round 2010 Soccer World Cup match, as well as one of the semi-finals.
Labour inspectors paid a surprise visit to the site on Monday afternoon and found that safety conditions had improved.
"... inspectors found all areas of non-compliance appropriately rectified in line with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act," said spokesperson Zolisa Siqaba.
A team of inspectors visited the Green Point site on Wednesday and "received a thumbs up" after its first comprehensive safety inspection, the City of Cape Town said.
The inspection on the Durban site formed part of the national inspection campaign at various construction sites in different provinces across the country.
The inspections would continue until the end of this week and were aimed at reducing the accidents in the construction sector.
