Johannesburg - The Mamelodi Sundowns player who was killed in a car crash has been identified as 22-year-old Mpho "Gift" Leremi, the SA Football Players Union (Safpu) said on Tuesday.
"The SA Football Players Union is devastated to hear about the untimely death of one of our members and Mamelodi Sundowns player, Mpho "Gift" Leremi," Safpu spokesperson Elvis Sekgobela said in a statement.
Leremi was formerly with Orlando Pirates.
The player was killed at around 21:00 on Monday after he lost control of his car and was flung out of the vehicle on the R556 between Vaal Road and Brackendowns, Alberton.
Sekgobela said Leremi was one of the best midfielders in the country and a key player who would have contributed much to Bafana Bafana.
"Mpho Leremi's football skills will be sorely missed by the South African fans and his passing has left a massive void to his family and South African football in general.
"He played a very important role for all our junior national teams and he will be remembered for his contribution. May his soul rest in peace," said Sekgobela.
