2010: SA to go green

"It is essential to ensure that the World Cup be hosted in a sustainable manner with minimum negative impact on the environment," said Blessing Manale, environmental planning chief director at the Department of Environmental Affairs.
He was speaking at the 7th World Conference on Environment and Sport in Beijing, China.
He said South Africa would use the energy around the event to promote responsible environmental living.
Environment advisor to the Local Organising Committee, Ike Ndlovu said they were working around the clock with host cities to ensure their plans minimised environmental impact.
The department's environmental strategy for 2010 would consider water conservation, energy efficiency, carbon offset, sustainable tourism, waste and transportation.
