Shambles at PSL AGM

Johannesburg - Politics mixed with sport once more on Saturday as the PSL annual general meeting (AGM) was hijacked by Parliament.
The City Press reports that the AGM was disrupted when businessman Butityi Konki, allegedly speaking on behalf of Parliament's portfolio committee on sport, told delegates the issue of the R70-million commissions paid to five executive members could not be discussed.
What authority Parliament has to determine the AGM agenda of the PSL - a non-governmental organisation - is not clear. However, it meant the burning issue of the commissions was postponed to a date yet to be set, though financial and constitutional issues were addressed.
The much-anticipated announcement of new sponsors for the Absa Cup and First Division was also postponed to next week.
The drama began when Konki told the AGM that the Parliament's portfolio committee on sport's chairperson, Butana Komphela, was upset that the committees' "integrity" had been questioned by Ajax Cape Town boss John Comitis.
This after the committee had backed the R70-million payment to Irvin Khoza, PSL finance committee head Kaizer Motaung, executive member Mato Madlala, former CEO Trevor Phillips and consultant Mark Mancer for their role in securing sponsorship for the PSL.
When contacted by the City Press, Khumalo denied Konki was representing parliament, but admitted he had instructed the AGM not to discuss the matter.
"I sent him [Konki] to speak to Jomo [Sono] about this matter as I could not get hold of him," he said. "I needed to tell him [Sono] that this matter could not go ahead as the integrity of Parliament was being questioned."
The decision has now been made to discuss the matter at a later AGM, the date of which has yet to be determined.
