  • Johannesburg - South Africa will be ready for the Fifa World Cup in 2010, Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa said at the official opening of a football business convention in Sandton on Monday.

Shilowa said the country was on track with infrastructure development such as the upgrading of transport and roads.

"Now it's up to the coach," said Shilowa.

He said the country was proud to host the convention - Soccerex 2007 to 2009.

Fifa President Sepp Blatter, who officially declared the convention open, said Soccerex was a global convention dedicated to the professional football environment.

"It is a unique occasion for delegates as well as exhibitors to show products and services in support of another successful Fifa World Cup."

Blatter said that there were 260 million players in football.

"[And] more than 1 billion people directly or indirectly involved...this is the market we can offer you," he told the room full of business people.

"We at Fifa, we trust South Africa," he said adding that it was a big adventure not only for South Africa but for the African continent.
