Sevilla seeking Arsenal spark
26/11/2007 17:18 - (SA)
Seville - Sevilla believe that
taking on an in-form Arsenal side in the Champions League on
Tuesday will inspire them to a return to form after an unsteady
start to the season.
The Andalucians, beaten 3-0 by Arsenal in September, slipped
to 10th in the Primera Liga after a second successive defeat at
the weekend, going down 2-1 at home to Real Mallorca.
"We are going to put the past behind us, we won't be
thinking about the defeat in London or the loss to Mallorca,"
striker Frederic Kanoute told a news conference on Monday.
"We just want to show the real face of Sevilla, we want to
show the way we can really play.
"The team aren't down in the dumps, they are in good spirits
and we know that we are at our best when we play big teams.
"We have started slowly against some of our weaker
opponents, but I don't think there will be any problems of
motivation against Arsenal."
Sevilla are second in Group H, a point behind already
qualified Arsenal, who are top of the Premier League, but have a
chance to wrest the leadership from the Londoners when they meet
at the Sanchez Pizjuan.
"Now is not the time for feeling sorry for ourselves or
raking over past failures," said coach Manolo Jimenez, who took
charge of Sevilla after Juande Ramos's sudden departure for
Tottenham Hotspur last month.
"We have to show our credentials and revive our fortunes
against one of the best teams on the continent.
"We know how hard it will be, but we also know that if we
play to 100 percent of our ability then it will be very
difficult for them."
Jimenez said that leading scorer Luis Fabiano was fit to
play after recovering from an ankle problem, but he would not
make a decision on whether to play defender Jose Angel Crespo
until the day of the match.
The 20-year-old left back fractured his cheek bone when he
was elbowed by midfielder Mahamadou Diarra in a Primera Liga
win over Real Madrid earlier this month.
