2010: Spotlight on sex tourism
05/12/2007 11:09 - (SA)
Pretoria - 2010 sex tourism and trafficking concerns will come under the spotlight at the Human Sciences Research Council seminar on human trafficking in Pretoria on Wednesday.
South Africa is the main destination in Southern Africa for human trafficking and 60% of the victims are children and young girls under the age of 15.
While South Africa is a signatory to the UN protocol on human trafficking, children's rights organisations warn that the 2010 World Cup could provide an ideal market for trafficked women and children because no specific legislation exists.
At a conference held by the Global Alliance Against Trafficking in Women in Bangkok, Thailand last month, the need to adequately prepare for the 2010 World Cup was one of the topics on the agenda.
