Crazy schedule awaits Bafana
07/12/2007 12:56  - (SA)

  • Special away kit for Bafana
  • Parreira's 'bold step' welcomed
  • SA ditch Benni for Nations Cup
  • Johannesburg - June 2008 is set to be a busy time for Bafana Bafana players after Fifa confirmed that their first four qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup finals would be played on consecutive weekends during that month.

It will be a tough schedule for players who have come off long domestic or European seasons to be thrown straight into crucial international qualifiers.

"We have written to Fifa seeking clarification of this," Safa CEO Raymond Hack told Reuters. "It seems a little tough on the players."

The actual fixtures have yet to be released, but what does appear clear in that South Africa will have to travel to two of Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Equatorial Guinea, as well as hosting two home matches, in one month.

Although not under pressure to the qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals, they must finish either top or as one of the eight best runners-up in their group to move forward in the qualification process for the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola in 2010.

And that hectic period of travel might not afford them the best start in a first round qualification process that finishes in September 2008.
