Zondo laments woeful finishing
10/12/2007 11:28 - (SA)
Bloemfontein - Bloemfontein Celtic coach Khabo Zondo was highly upset after his team drew 1-1 with Thanda Royal Zulu in an Absa Premier League match at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Sunday.
"I'm not happy with the point," he stated, "We should have finished off the chances we created and it's something we have to work on.
Celtic striker Lebohang Kukane scored in the 7th minute but Royals midfielder Bernard Parker equalised three minutes later and this fixture promised a glut of goals, but bad finishing from both sides meant they left with only a point each.
"We were the better team and they did not trouble us much," Zondo said.
"That goal should not have happened and we'll have to improve our defence if we are to win games.
But Zondo blamed the poor finishing more for the draw. Celtic defender Thumelo Nhalapo, who set up the first goal, missed a glorious chance in the dying minutes of the game and Kukane too missed good chances to score as Celtic invaded the Royals goalmouth.
Team missed him
"The players made bad decisions when attacking and the final pass was either too strong or easily intercepted. It's unacceptable," he lamented. "But why they could not score when there was an opportunity, I don't know," he said despairingly.
With veteran midfielder John Maduka watching from the sidelines, Zondo said the team missed him, but they had to move on if he was not available (Maduka is sidelined with an injury).
Zondo mentioned 19-year old midfielder Kamohela Mabuya is a player to watch in the famous green-and-white of Celtic.
"Any team can do with a player such as John but unfortunately for us he is injured. But we're a team and have good players who can do the job. I think Kamohela was excellent in midfield and he is someone who can improve and serve the club well.
This was Celtic's fourth draw in a dozen league games and the Free State team are seventh on the log while Royals remain rooted to the bottom of the log with 10 points.
