New concerns over power cuts
18/01/2008 14:44 - (SA)
Johannesburg - South Africa's power capacity for the 2010 Soccer World Cup is once again in the spotlight with the Democratic Alliance on Thursday describing the situation as "catastrophic".
DA spokesperson Hendrik Schmidt said if the situation is left unchecked, it will undermine South Africa's future growth prospects. Random power cuts around the country are costing the economy millions of rands every day.
The situation has been compounded by Eskom's appeal to government for a moratorium on large-scale industrial projects until 2013. A new nuclear station is on the cards to assist Koeberg but if all goes according to plan, construction will only start in 2010.
The power utility has also set up a task team to ensure that SA has adequate electricity during the 2010 WC.
