  • League title race wide open
  • Ajax looking to retain top spot
  • Cosmos ready to battle
  • Johannesburg - BidVest Wits remained level on points with Absa Premiership leaders Ajax Cape Town after a 2-0 win over basement club Jomo Cosmos at the BidVest Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.

Defender Ashraf Hendricks struck twice in the first half to hand the hosts all three points in a heated match that saw both teams end with ten men.

Wits pressured the visitors early on and beanpole striker Dale Studzinski saw his 12th-minute header come back off the crossbar.

Ironically though, it was defender Hendricks who broke the deadlock in favour of the Clever Boys midway through the first half, heading into the back of the net from Noah Chivuta's corner kick.

And the 23-year-old Wits player doubled his tally when he again struck with a headed effort on 40 minutes. This time new signing Richard Rantjie was the provider.

But Wits' Chivuta put his team at a numerical disadvantage when he was sent off for violent conduct just prior to half time.

Cosmos, however, never looked likely to mount a comeback despite having the extra man and that advantage was relinquished late on when Burundian defender Valery Nahayo was dismissed for his second caution of the match.

Wits moved to 29 points, level with the Urban Warriors but placed second due to inferior goal difference, while Cosmos remain rooted to the bottom on 13.

Cautions: Kubeka; Elhadji, Tshilo, Nahayo, Mhlathe, Mofokeng Dismissals: Chivuta 44'; Nahayo 85'

Wits: Josephs, Evans, Lobo, Hendricks, Shendzelani, Winstanley, Rantjie (Sibande 90'), Chivuta, Sosibo (Kubeka 68'), Bienvenu, Studzinski (Radebe 53')

    Coach: De Sa

Cosmos: Phali, Nahayo, Tshilo, Plaatjies (Mngomezulu 61'), Mhlathe, Sono, Elhadji (Sephadi 45'), Letsholonyane, Mofokeng, Mabalane, Macala (Mwape 58')

    Coach: Sono
