  • Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana midfielder Elrio van Heerden will sign a contract extension with Club Brugge until 2011 - if the club have it their way.

After his exciting displays at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, Van Heerden is in a good negotiating position, but on the advice of his business manager, Rob Moore, the feeling is that an extra season at least in Belgium will prepare the 25-year-old for bigger things in the future.

"Elrio's been injured for long periods and needs to get a full season under his belt before thinking about a move away. Also, Brugge are pushing for European qualification and this will be the best opportunity for him," Moore said.

In Belgium the top two teams in the Jupiler League qualify for the Uefa Champions League and the third placed team for the Uefa Cup.

Brugge, who are sitting in top spot on the table, are expected to meet the player and his manager this week to discuss extending Van Heerden's current contract, which falls due in June 2009.
