Chiefs desperate for points
29/02/2008 12:20 - (SA)
Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town will look to pile further pressure on former mentor Muhsin Ertugral when they welcome Kaizer Chiefs to Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Kick off is at 15h30.
The Urban Warriors' youngsters will no doubt have a fair amount of affection for Ertugral after his successful spell with the club in 2006/07, but they must put that aside as they go in search of three points that will keep up their lead at the head of the table.
The Chiefs' coach will be desperate for a positive result in Cape Town to alleviate some of the pressure on his shoulders and possibly claim a psychological advantage over Ajax ahead of the teams' high profile cup meeting later in the month.
But he will find the going tough against the rampaging team he helped to mould.
Ajax have won all four of their games since the turn of the year and look increasingly likely to run away with things at the top of the league.
'Preparations going well'
Coach Craig Rosslee will no doubt be guarding against those thoughts, but such has been the manner of the Cape side's rise to prominence this season that it would be no surprise to see them picking up their first Absa Premiership title.
"The preparations are going very well. We are taking each game as it comes and trying to win every game and be real challengers to the title," says Ajax's assistant coach Wilfred Mugeyi.
"We just need to keep the momentum going, focus on strengthening our lead and not focus on other teams," he adds.
Chiefs, on the other hand, have been patchy throughout the campaign. That goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been their best player says much about the form, or lack thereof, of the outfield players.
A 2-0 win over BidVest Wits last Wednesday gave supporters hope of a revival but the team's failings - an inability to create and/or covert goal scoring chances, costly mistakes in defence and a lack of commitment - were all on display when they lost 1-0 to SuperSport United on Saturday evening.
Amakhosi will need to improve well beyond the form they have shown this season if they are to take any points off the title chasing Urban Warriors.
