R70m sponsorship for Ajax?

  • Ngobeni back to boost Ajax
  • Urban Warriors stumble
  • Ajax can pull clear of United
  • Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town and MTN are back together again. After almost a decade without any strong financial backing, the Urban Warriors have finally got reason to smile again.

They are back with the giant cellular company that sponsored them at the start of their campaign in the Premier League, albeit in a far smaller way.

Unconfirmed reports have it that MTN will be backing the Cape Town-based outfit to the tune of R70m for a period of five years.

There was speculation three years ago that MTN would link up with Ajax, however, Mamelodi Sundowns came into the picture and the Chloorkop-based outfit got the backing instead.

Club boss John Comitis has confirmed they will be unveiling a new sponsor on Friday, but declined to give further details.

Comitis said that it would pleasing to be relieved of the burden of running the club without sponsorship and that he would be smiling again as he could now compete with the "big boys" of the Premiership in terms of getting additional quality players.

Comitis says he has managed to keep the cream of the team together by denying many of his rivals the chance to grab some of his key players before the start of next season.

The majority of Ajax players have lengthy contracts and this augurs well for the future of the club and what they hope to achieve in the Caf Champions League next year should they manage to win or finish second in the League.
