Parreira puts Bafana in turmoil
21/04/2008 09:18  - (SA)

  • Official: Parreira will resign
  • Search for Parreira's successor
  • Parreira calls press conference
  • Johannesburg - Just when it seemed that Bafana Bafana had finally turned a corner ahead of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the man who engineered that turnaround, coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, is going.

Parreira and the SA Football Association are expected to announce the coach's resignation at a media briefing in Johannesburg at 15:00 on Monday. This will follow an extraordinary meeting of Safa's National Executive Committee at 14:00, where it is believed the coach will hand in his notice.

This shock development - the result, according to reports in the Brazilian press, of Parreira wanting to return to Brazil to attend to his seriously ill wife, Leila, who has cancer - could not have come at a worse time for Bafana.

The national team, after their tame exit in the first round of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana in January, had finally roared into life in an impressive 3-0 victory over a highly-rated Paraguay in Pretoria at the end of last month.

Bafana had been threatening to "click" for some time under Parreira, and against the South Americans it seemed this had finally happened.

The result was significant because it silenced government detractors of Parreira, including Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile, who had threatened to "nationalise" Bafana, and the chairperson of parliament's portfolio committee on Sport, Butana Komphela, who had called the coach and players "pathetic".

    Experimental squads

In an excellent victory over the Paraguayans, Bafana also went a long way to winning over what had been an increasingly sceptical press.

Parreira, Bafana's 14th coach in 15 years, seemed set for a luxury few before him had experienced of an improving relationship with the media and breathing space to continue calling up experimental squads, creating a pool of young, up-and-coming players ahead of 2010.

No-one expected Bafana to suddenly start winning all their games convincingly, but 2008 was poised to be an exciting turning point, with the team set to become more clearly defined in its player personnel, and more consistent in its performances in the year of the Confederations Cup in 2009.

Whoever takes over from Parreira now will not quite have to start from scratch. They will have the legacy of a pool of around 90 players that were identified by the Brazilian World Cup-winning coach since taking over the Bafana job in January last year.

But for any coach, building a competitive team for the World Cup in just two years will be an undertaking verging on the impossible.

To make matters worse, Bafana have vital Nations Cup qualifiers to play in the following months. They meet Nigeria in Abuja on May 30, then in June are at home against Equatorial Guinea, away against Sierra Leone, then at home again to Sierra Leone in the space of three weeks.

    Contract

Parreira has reportedly named several potential successors, saying he believes Safa should employ a Brazilian. These include current Flamengo coach Joel Santana and Internacional boss Abel Braga.

Other names linked to the job include former England and current Manchester City coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, whose contract ends after Euro 2008 in June.

Scolari won the World Cup with native Brazil in 2002 and took Portugal to the Euro 2004 final and 2006 World Cup semi-finals.

Safa might choose to give the job to Parreira's assistants, Jairo Leal and Pitso Mosimane, for the sake of continuity and to carry on the work the coach has started.

Swift decisions and action must be taken by the association, perhaps with assistance from LOC chairperson Danny Jordaan and Fifa president Sepp Blatter, to find the right man in the shortest space of time, and avoid a national catastrophe.

What happen in Ghana will follow in 2010 here in our soil.SAFA please pay our local coaches and appoint one of them otherwise expect our first round exit in 2010. - Bethuel

      Was a joke anyway
    21/04/2008 09:57
With that salary and then we could not even qualify. We don't have the players period. - anon

      We need Parreira's services.
    21/04/2008 10:14
He is one of the best coaches in the world,as much as he made a recommendation it should be respected.Bafana have been performing badly internationally and the Brazillian coach changed the team completely. He should be engaged in a certain way even if he is not in the country since now he understand our local football. As much as he made it clear that he was coming to the country leaving behind bad situation back at home like his sick wifeand grand children. VIVA Parrera viva. - andile Shabangu

      2010
    21/04/2008 10:44
The reason for the coach leaving I think maybe because of lack of skill in the team which is relatively available within our society. The problem I think is that there is not enough good white & black players within the quotas system. If we could all avoid the political turmoil within our society , maybe he would not have left. Something to think boys!!! - sergio

      It's very unfortuante for SA
    21/04/2008 10:47
I feel SA is very unfortunate to loose such a coach of which I believe in him and what he was doing,if ever he recommends someone from Brazil I'm sure he knows what he can do,let him bring the Brazillian. - Sifiso

      bring Scolari to MZANTSI
    21/04/2008 10:59
brazilian football is something we can always identify with, so Scolari could be the right man SA needs, his record speaks for itself. His contract expires in June let's grab him before another country snatch Him. - spell

      Parreira
    21/04/2008 11:01
I'm sorry that Parreira is leaving. The Bafana just started to get their touch with the ball.He changed the players mind and the way they used to play.I'm not sure if we will make the firts round in the 2010 SWC.I hope we will get a Brazilian couch to continue Parreira's work. - Mr Real

      Bafana + Parreira = Success
    21/04/2008 11:14
Ghana was a trial run to see what the boys can do at internation level. There Parreira got a basic idea of what he has to work with. He gelled the local and international bases players into a winning team. We're scoring goals and keeping clean sheets. It would best for the team if he can still stay in an advisory position, while his assistant/s carry on from where he left off. Sorry to hear about your wife. All of the best to the Parreira Family. - Randi Walters

      Perreira resignation
    21/04/2008 11:20
Something smells rotten in the land of Denmark (SA football). One does not accept a post knowing well that your spouse is ill and then decide to resign. I would think that there are third forces involved which had disillussioned the coach. Not being negative, just realistic. - Vincent Gibbons
