  • Four Bucs defenders injured
  • Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates' defender Destin Makita has defied initial fears that injury had brought his first season in South Africa to a premature end.

The Congolese has returned to boost the Bucs defence as the season enters its final lap.

Pirates coach Owen da Gama reveals that the player is in contention for a starting berth away to title hopefuls Ajax Cape Town at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday evening.

"It is good news and I am more than excited," the club's website quotes Makita as saying.

The dreadlocked Congo international sustained a long-term thigh muscle injury just before the mid-season break.

Meanwhile, da Gama is exhilarated with the return of Makita's defensive partner Tonic Chabalala.

The veteran central defender was injured a fortnight ago as Pirates huffed and puffed to a goalless draw against cross-city rivals Jomo Cosmos.

"Their (Makita, Chabalala) availability gives me a few options at the back which is a situation I haven't enjoyed, lately. I am still very optimistic and we will give it our best shot."

Pirates this season has had to contend with a number of injuries in a development that has contributed significantly to the team bowing out of contention for the league title.

On Wednesday they face an Ajax Cape Town outfit that is experiencing a bumpy run of form but eager to put its hopes of winning a maiden title back on track.
