  • London - Manchester United stars were involved in an ugly clash with stewards after their 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday.

Patrice Evra, Paul Scholes, John O'Shea, Gerard Pique and Gary Neville were taking part in the warm-down on the pitch when they were asked to move by Chelsea groundstaff.

The United players refused to leave and an angry row broke out between the stars and Chelsea stewards and groundstaff before the incident was eventually resolved.

Chelsea are to examine CCTV footage of the incident. A spokesman for the club said: "We will be studying the relevant CCTV and camera footage in a bid to establish the best and most appropriate course of action."

Meanwhile, United defender Rio Ferdinand was forced to apologise to a steward after accidently kicking her in the aftermath of Michael Ballack's late penalty winner at Stamford Bridge.

The steward was unhurt and unperturbed by the incident but a United statement said: "Rio would like to apologise to the lady."

The incidents capped a miserable day for United, who face a nerve-jangling end to the season after Chelsea drew level on points thanks to Ballack's double strike.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Sir Alex Ferguson's side could be without Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney in Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona.

Vidic was stretchered off after a tooth was knocked into his lip by Didier Drogba in an accidental clash, while Rooney injured himself in scoring United's goal.
