  • Cape Town - Santos were unable to overcome SuperSport United's stiff resistance and had to settle for a 0-0 draw at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

The home side were on top for the majority of the first half, but despite having several excellent chances to score, they were unable to find the back of the net, mainly due to the form of SuperSport keeper Andre Arendse.

The former Santos custodian pulled off his first fine save when he stopped Eleazar Rodgers from heading home Thom-Rick October's free kick in the 11th minute.

In the 20th minute Tawonga Chomodzi did well to set up a goal-scoring chance for himself inside the box, but his firm shot was palmed away by Arendse.

United's goal stopper was again on hand three minutes later to make a sharp save from Romano Scott, who had broken down the right wing, an area where the Cape side was finding a lot of space.

The Pretoria side's only real opportunity of the first half came in the 34th minute when Katlego Mphela pounced on the edge of the area before firing a shot against the upright.

The pace slackened off somewhat in the second half, with SuperSport enjoying the first chance when Shane Poggenpoel fired over from the edge of the area in the 52nd minute.

In the 68th minute a fine solo run by Mphela seemed likely to end in a goal, but Santos defender Musa Otieno did well to make a challenge.

With five minutes to go, Chimodzi was gifted a chance from a poor clearance by Arendse, but the Santos midfielder was unable to hit the back of the net from 40-yards out.

The final chance of the game fell to Santos when Mogogi Gabanamong teed up a shot on the edge of the area, but his effort flew straight at Arendse.
