Djiehoua scores crucial goal
14/05/2008 20:02  - (SA)

  • Pirates back in the points
  • Birds heading for the Top 8
  • Jomo Cosmos relegated
  • Johannesburg - Serge Djiehoua was the hero when he scored a last minute goal to secure Thanda Royal Zulu FC a crucial win against BidVest Wits which could possibly ensure the coastal side's Absa Premiership status for next season.

Djiehoua scored his third goal of the match just when the home side's fans were drifting out the stadium with heavy hearts to give Thanda a narrow 3-2 win over BidVest Wits.

The game started on a high note with Thanda finding their rhythm very early in the game and could have put the matters beyond doubt in the first half.

The small crowd that had gathered to give Thanda some inspiration was silenced when Rene Richards scored a free kick to put Wits 1-0 up.

However, Thanda were on equal footing just five minutes later through Djiehoua's excellent strike in the 28th minute.

The big Ivory Coast striker put his side 2-1 up in the 43rd minute with a penalty after he was brought down in the box by Ashraf Hendricks. Thanda were leading 2-1 at half-time.

The second half started a bit slower as Thanda seemed to take their foot off the pedal and this allowed the visitors to make a comeback.

Wits defender Hendricks rose above the Thanda defenders in the 78th minute to level matters with a header from a cross.

Djiehoua's 93rd minute strike however changed the complexion of the game and gave the home side the full three points with a brilliant header.
