Chiefs move to fifth on log
14/05/2008 21:57  - (SA)

  • Bartlett seems on his way out
  • Ertugral's Chiefs future secure
  • Downs head back into Africa
  • Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs have continued their good form and moved into fifth in the Absa Premiership with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday night.

Amakhosi were always in control of the game and goals in either half from Arthur Zwane and Mabhuti Khenyeza sealed the three points.

There were few chances in the first half, though Chiefs did have the better of the play and deserved their lead at the break.

Siphiwe Tshabalala had the first shot in anger, but his low drive was palmed to safety by Shu-Aib Walters in the visitors' goal.

An excellent turn from Petrus Mahlatsi created some space, but his shot from the edge of the area was always going wide of Itumeleng Khune's goal.

But the breakthrough came on 43 minutes as brilliant work from Tshabalala on the left saw the winger drive to the byline, and lay the ball back to Zwane, who side-footed home from the middle of the box to give Amakhosi the lead.

Khenyeza should have done better from a Jimmy Tau cross just after the break, but glanced his header well wide of the post with not a defender in sight, while Darrel Smith went just wide at the other end with a shot from outside the box.

But an excellent through-ball for Khenyeza on 67 minutes saw the striker round the on-rushing Walters, and coolly side-foot home to double Chiefs' advantage.

Thuso Phala almost added a third five minutes from time when his rocket shot was well-saved by Walters.
