East London - Platinum Stars became the champions of the inaugural Eastern Cape Premier Cup when they beat Premier Soccer League champions SuperSport United 4-3 on penalties at the Absa Stadium, East London, on Saturday.
SuperSport defender Thabo September came close to scoring with a header in the 20th minute but his strike was cleared by Stars goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini.
SuperSport survived a Stars attack in the 32nd minute when Digaang Masonabo failed to capitalise on a defensive mistake by Oscar Ntagae.
Stars were unlucky in the dying minutes of the second half when their goal was ruled offside by referee Ace Ngcobo and so took the game to penalties.
Stars victory earns them R100 000. The other participating teams - Bay United, Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United - all earned R40 000.
In the opening games Stars beat Celtic 2-1 and SuperSport beat Bay United 2-0.
