Johannesburg - Promoted PSL club Maritzburg United on Monday announced they had acquired the services of Gordon Igesund, the coach with the Midas touch, for their return to the Premier League in the coming season.
The club interviewed four candidates before the decision was made to appoint Igesund," team manager Quinton Jetto announced through the PSL website.
"We feel he is the right man to help the club lay a solid foundation in the PSL's premier division and move on to bigger things," added Jetto about the coach who has helped guide a record four clubs to the Premier League title.
"His record speaks for itself," said the United team manager But while affluent, big-spending Mamelodi Sundowns was the last of the four championship winners under Igesund's guidance - the others being Manning Rangers, Orlando Pirates and Santos - the one-time "Golden Boy" of the PSL went through a traumatic final few months with The Brazilians as they fell from grace in spite of their array of talented players.
Igesund had been linked with Bloemfontein Celtic and a number of vague overseas appointments since leaving Sundowns, but his signing for the club who gained promotion after ending PSL First Division champions last season will end what has largely been a six-month siesta away from soccer.
