Cape Town - After showing it's true colours for a good few days in the not so fairest Cape, winter eventually took a time-out and allowed the sun to shine on the 021 Auto Maccabi Soccer Tournament
Twenty four teams lined up for a five-a-side event, held at Van Riebeeck Park in Vredehoek on Sunday. All in aid of the Maccabi Soccer Team which will represent South Africa at the Maccabiah Games to be held in Israel in June next year.
The event, organised and run by members of the Maccabi Soccer team, proved to be a fantastic spectacle full of local soccer skills, together with music and fun activities throughout the day.
A definite highlight for some was the mid day match between the Redbull Ladies and the Fly on the Wall Ladies Academy, while others preferred the half-time show from South Africa's freestyle soccer champion Chris Njokwana.
But for the 32 children from Nazareth House and the South African Children's Home, who attended the Seven Spur Kids Coaching Clinic, learning new skills while making new friends was undoubtedly the highlight of the day.
The major action however, was on the field where over R10 000 worth of prizes was up for grabs. The big winners of the day were The Untouchables, who, together with their captain, Jared Pastor, voted player of the tournament, were indeed untouchable on the day.
They defeated the SWAT team to lift the title. The plate was won by Sunday United, conquerors of our very own Sport24 team in the group stages, who snuck past the guys from the Bang Bang Club in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Daniel Serman, the organiser of the event on behalf of Maccabi was undoubtedly delighted with the event, having the following to say: "The day was a huge success. Even the weather played its part and a lot of money was raised to help the guys in their efforts to go to Israel next year."
