Fish: I've seen worse kit

  • Johannesburg - Former Orlando Pirates defender Mark Fish says the red kit Bucs played in against Manchester United is not bad. The hosts lost 1-0 in a Vodacom Challenge match at a packed Absa Stadium in Durban filled with the red of the visitors colours.

"I am used to seeing Pirates in black and white, so at first it looked strange to me," he said. "But it's not a bad strip, it's a nice colour and a cool design."

Fish did not want to comment on the game as he only watched a few minutes but stated that he has seen worse strips.

"Remember when Man (United) had that yellow and green strip. That was not nice. And even that grey strip they had was awful. Clubs can and do deviate from their traditional colours and maybe this will work for Pirates," said Fish, who won the 1995 African Champions League trophy with the Soweto club.

"I'm not sure of the psychological advantage but, at the end of the season, I'm sure they'll assess the red kit's worth and maybe keep it," said the former Charlton Athletic player. The "Addicks" also wore a red strip but were relegated from the English Premiership in the 2006/07 season.

United wore their new away kit, white shirts and blue shorts, while thousands of their fans donned the traditional red kit clearly outnumbering the Ghost - as Pirates fans are known.

Pirates take on traditional rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Thursday in Port Elizabeth and the winner will face the English Premiership and Uefa Champions League winners at Loftus on Saturday.
