Shocks in Bafana squad

  • Johannesburg - There were plenty of surprises in the Bafana Bafana squad selected by coach Joel Santana for the international friendly against Australia in London on August 20.

The first surprise is that players from the four clubs involved in the semi-finals of the MTN 8 competition - Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns, have been selected.

Downs coach Trott Moloto had gone on record as saying there was no way he would release players for the game, with the club set to meet Tshwane rivals SuperSport on consecutive weekends, but it seems his hand was forced as the match does fall on an official Fifa date.

The next shock is the recall of Siyabonga Nkosi, who has struggled for game-time at Arminia Bielefeld in Germany, Matthew Pattison, who had fell off the radar after an uninspiring season in the English Championship with Norwich City, and Sibusiso Zuma, who's Bafana career appeared over after the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

There is also a first call-up for 20-year-old Glasgow Rangers midfielder Dean Furman, who made his senior debut for the club last season.

The return of Benni McCarthy upfront will come as no surprise to many, despite his self-imposed exile from the 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in June.

    Bafana squad for Australia

    Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Moeneeb Josephs

Defenders: Aaron Mokoena, Bongani Khumalo, Nazier Allie, Bryce Moon, Nasief Morris, Bevan Fransman, Bradley Carnell, Innocent Mdledle

Midfielders: Lance Davids, Macbeth Sibaya, Thulasizwe Mbuyane, Matthew Pattison, Surprise Moriri, Kagiso Dikgacoi, Lefa Tsutsulupa, Siyabonga Nkosi, Dean Furman, Teko Modise, Siphiwe Tshabalala

Strikers: Sibusiso Zuma, Katlego Mphela, Benni McCarthy
