Perth - Flyhalf Matt Giteau's penalty in the final minute gave the Western Force a 22-21 win over the Waikato Chiefs in a Super 14 rugby match on Saturday.
The result undermined Waikato's push for a semi-final berth, while keeping the Force in the hunt for a top four spot with two games to play.
The Force scored two early tries and led 14-3 at halftime, with No. 8 Matt Hodgson charging down Richard Nutbrown's attempted clearance to score the first try.
After Stephen Donald's penalty, the Force's good possession yielded more points in the 11th minute when Drew Mitchell charged over after a slick passing move.
Lelia Masaga and Stephen Donald scored second-half tries for the Chiefs before Giteau's late penalty gave the Force the win.
Scores:
Western Force 22 (Matt Hodgson, Drew Mitchell, James Stannard tries, Matt Giteau 2 conversions, penalty), Waikato 21 (Lelia Masaga, Stephen Donald tries, Donald 2 penalties, conversion, Dwayne Sweeney drop goal). HT, 14-3.
