London - Heavy rain came to the rescue of Amelie Mauresmo on Thursday as she teetered on the brink of defeat at the hands of top seed Lindsay Davenport in their Wimbledon semi-final.
Davenport, the 1999 champion, was leading 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/4), 5-3 when the rain sent the players scurrying to the locker room.
However, the rain, which had delayed the start of action by four and a half hours, returned too late to save defending champion Maria Sharapova.
The Russian was knocked out by Venus Williams 7-6 (7/2) 6-1 in the other semi-final.
