Rain delays start of US Open
28/08/2006 17:40 - (SA)
New York - The start of the 2006 US Open has been delayed because of rain.
The hardcourt tournament and final Grand Slam of the season was supposed to kick off at 11am local time (15:00GMT) on Monday but two days of rain have made the courts slippery.
Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne and Italy's Maria Elena Camerin were scheduled to play the first match of the day on the main stadium but their start time has been pushed back. Organisers said they could start at 11:45 if the rain stops and they can get the court ready in time.
Play on the outer courts at the National Tennis Centre will not start before 12:15.
