Serena to play in Leipzig
10/07/2002 17:44 - (SA)
Leipzig, Germany - Wimbledon champion and world number one Serena Williams has decided she will play for the first time at the $585 000 Leipzig Grand Prix in September, organisers said on Wednesday.
Leipzig tournament director Henner Ziegfeld said Williams had
confirmed that she would play at the September 21-29 event.
"She spontaneously gave the confirmation at the Grand Slam in
Wimbledon," Ziegfeld said.
The 20-year-old Serena, who beat her older sister Venus to
capture the Wimbledon crown, pulled out of last year's Leipzig
tournament after terrorist attacks in the United States on
September 11.
World number two Venus Williams has reconsidered and will not
appear at the tournament, which will attract Belgian top ten
players Kim Clijsters (No 5) and Justine Henin (No 7) while
Russian heart- throb Anna Kournikova has been given a wild card
position. - Sapa-DPA
