What's best for the Boks?

It's the end of the work week and time for the Great Friday debate. So just what is the best result of this weekend's Tri-Nations game for the Boks?

Rob Houwing of Sport24 spoke to Bok assistant coach Dick Muir earlier in the week, and he thought long and hard before venturing: "I guess we should be hoping the All Blacks win it. Otherwise, the Wallabies go two from two (in wins) and possibly jump away from the pack a little bit."

But what is the most desired result from a Springbok point of view as Australia and New Zealand meet for the first time this year in Sydney?

The present, bunched log has New Zealand on five points from two matches, South Africa on five from three and Australia four from just one outing - theirs obviously the most favourable position at this juncture.

"There is also a case for wishing that teams win their homes games from now on," Muir said, clearly referring to the fact that the Boks have already bucked that trend by winning famously in Dunedin.

So would an Australian win be better for the Boks because we seem to have their number here on home soil, or would a New Zealand win to prevent the Aussie's jumping ahead of the pack be better?

Perhaps you are not too bothered, either because you think the Boks can beat both the Aussies and Kiwis at home, or because you think the silverware is beyond the Boks this year?

Whatever your thoughts, let The Great Friday debate begin ...

      Aussies must win
    25/07/2008 10:45
I think it will be far easier to beat the Aussies on home soil than the Kiwi's, so it would be better to keep the points away from the Kiwi's - Greg Rdyer

      Friday Debate
    25/07/2008 10:45
Well is does not matter who wins tomorrow, because in order for the Boks to win they have to win all home games. I think we should punish the Wallabies at home, so our main concern should be the All Blacks, they are a formidable team and should try and come back at the Boks for that loss at Dunedin... - Sportsfan

well i feel the boks can beat both teams here at home - delie

      Go Aussies
    25/07/2008 10:51
Damn, can't believe I said that out loud. Appart from the poms, my least liked team is the Aussies. So I will definitely support the All Blacks this weekend, but feel it would be best for the Bok cause if the Aussies win. We've got two home games in hand against them and if we play the right combinations, we can defintely kick some Aussie bum in SA. And lets not forget that we usually get at least one over the Kiwis at home. - Joe

      The great debate
    25/07/2008 10:53
Well the Aussies need to lose this weekend, else their ego's will get too big again. Bit of a catch 22 in that I'd also not want the Kiwis to win. Of the 2 though, the Aussies must get hammered but not concede a bonus point! - UrBaN

      Aussies must win for Boks
    25/07/2008 10:55
An Aussie win would give us the best chance of winning the tri-nations. We should beat them at home. That will give us 8 points and possibly a bonus point thrown in. If we beat the All Blacks at Newlands we will be in a brilliant position to win as I can't see the Aussies beating the All Blacks 3 times. But I reckon the All Blacks will sneak it tomorrow. - Steve Farrell

      Go Aussies
    25/07/2008 10:55
All the teams need to win all of there home games,I think we will beat the the wallabies in 1 of the games with bonus points and get 4 points againts them and the All Blacks. Then we will be crowned champs!! - RV

      BOKS - TRI-NATIONS CHAMPS 2008
    25/07/2008 10:58
The Boks will be much stronger at home ? the Aussies have only won 1 away match in SA in 12 outings since the birth of Tri Nations Rugby which means we already have 2 wins in the bag. The AB will be a tough opponent as always but I believe the AB inexperience in the tight 5 will give the BOKS the edge and we will have a close win against them ? with 3 home wins for the BOKS we are already the Tri ?Nations CHAMPS of 2008 just a matter of time. - colin

      What's best for the Boks?
    25/07/2008 11:00
Australia to win, else it would nullify the boks' away victory in Dunedin if the Blacks also have an away victory. Home teams to win from here on in and the trophy is ours. - werner

      Bokke!!!
    25/07/2008 11:04
I recon a NZ win would be favourable. The Bokke are still in it to win, but we're not exactly famous for our comebacks so Aus not getting too far ahead may well work in our favour? - Philip

      Boks can win Tri-Nations, but
    25/07/2008 11:09
I think bonus points will be very critical this year. The teams are equally matched. - Hakuna Matata

      3rd in Tri-Nations
    25/07/2008 11:26
I don't think the Boks will win any of their home games, they were well beaten by the All Blacks and Wallabies, why?, because there is no continuity in the Bok side in key positions, Butch James is a tactical nightmare for his backline, he's very one dimensional, and some players in the team are not the best, "Snor" needs to select the best players, but for various reasons that isn't going to happen, so the Boks will have to be happy with 3rd in the Tri Nations and in the world rankings. - Bok fan

      A DRAW is BEST
    25/07/2008 11:28
In my opinion a Draw would be best , seldom occurs but it can ! - Nandos

      Boks
    25/07/2008 11:28
I think we can beat both teams at home, we already have one away win and regardless of who wins between Australia and New Zealand we will still be able to clinch all three games at home. - Ryno

      Go for 1 all
    25/07/2008 11:29
It's not important who win this week, but more important that whoever wins this week, loose next week. I am amazed at comments like this "the Aussies have only won 1 away match in SA in 12 outings since the birth of Tri Nations Rugby which means we already have 2 wins in the bag", considering our record in NZ and what happened there? - Boerbok

      A draw
    25/07/2008 11:36
I believe a draw between the two would be the ideal result from a points and a pychological point of view. This place alot more pressure on both teams when they come and plaz here in SA. Then it would just be up to us to ensure we win our home games. broc - Broc

A draw down under seems in order and for boks it will be just fine, and I truly think a draw will be the end result, henry vs deans, who knows? - willem

Is jy f$ken mal? There is no way the aussies will beat us twice in SA.My only worry is the AB at Newlands, but we should pull it trough.Go bokke! - RV

      NO BET AT ALL
    25/07/2008 11:58
I believe that we neet to set our focus on winning all our matches at home and not depend on other results. This has been a phenomenon for far too long - depending and biting your nails for other results to go your way. We could have made life easier for us if we won the Ausies last week, but we didn't and this put pressure on us to win and just win. This way we cannot be overtaken. Its time we show our worth as world champions and take the next best silverware. - Edwin

      No win situation
    25/07/2008 11:59
With these two teams playing , I support the ref ! - Mike Smith

      GO FOR HOME WINS
    25/07/2008 12:01
If we managed to win our home games we will definately win the Tri-nations cup without depending on the outcome of other results, like the one this weekend between Ausies and Nieu Zeeland, cause no matter wahat happens on Saturday the pressure will be on us to perform well at home. - Edwin

      Best case scenario...
    25/07/2008 12:12
A draw. Add to that a red card for a spear tackle by George Smith on Daniel Carter which put both out for at least 3 weeks. Realistically though - as much as i hate to say this, the aussies need to win this. no bonus points for either team. if the remaining games are all won by the home teams the we'll be champs. Good thing we're playing the ausies twice at home and not the blacks! - Gus

I hope the Aussies win......and we will win both games against the Springchickens eh boks - Andrew Brits - Freak

      A draw would lead to...
    25/07/2008 12:23
the best situation for the Boks.(and a likely outcome). It's a given that without winning home games the Boks don't stand a chance, we must win all 3.With a draw this weekend and then each team winning their home games, SA don't need bonus points. But SA will not know that before hand seeing as the last game is between AUS and NZ, so we must go for at least 2 BP's.Second prize would be if the home team wins from here on.We will know what's required once they come here. GO BOKKE! - Met Uysh!

      um... wallabies to win
    25/07/2008 12:27
I'd go for a wallaby victory, coz we have their number here on home soil. So they beat the blacks, and then the blacks beat them in nz. It's a totally different ball game when we play at home. And if those results go according to plan, we stand a good chance... however having said that, it's still not gonna be easy. - Shaheen Johnson

      Draw!!
    25/07/2008 12:31
A draw is a good option... - Dewald

      The way I see it.
    25/07/2008 12:38
The Boks have 3 home games left - winning those with NO bonus points will leave them on 17. The are 3 games involving both Oz and NZ left - if NZ will all 3 with bonus points, they can get to 20, and Aus can get to 19. So I say let's hope for a low-scoring draw, which takes 3 points out of the pool for both of them! - Dennis

      Oh Please!
    25/07/2008 12:38
It doesn't even matter what's good for the Boks! The ALL Blacks are licking their wounds after that lucky victory in Dunedin...so from here on we're going to win every single game, and be crowned TRY NATIONS Champions...again! - Kav (Forever All Blacks)

      BOKS
    25/07/2008 12:39
The best for the BOKS is to win all of there 3 remaining games ? we do not have to depend on the results of the other games as that is out of our hands. - colin

      Kav
    25/07/2008 13:18
You are correct you will TRY and win the TRI- nations, but fail just like in the world cup...again!The more you practise the luckier you get. There was no luck in that win.Take the loss like a man and be humble in defeat. - Rv

      Shame
    25/07/2008 13:25
What does it matter who wins this weekend. The Boks job is to go out and win games. If we need to rely on how the games turn out against Auz and AB then we are not sure about our strength. We win the next 3 games we win the Tri-Nations - simple as that. If we dont then we lose. On the result tomorrow. The Auz will win easily. They are better team at present. Who knows what will happen in a months time. - Big D

      Go bokke
    25/07/2008 13:38
Aussies to lose without getting a bonus point, all blacks to win with only 4 points. Still early to tell hope for the best. The tri-nations is going to be tight this year. - jmb
