Bok Tri-Nations ratings

2008-09-04 07:33

Tank Lanning and Rob Houwing

Cape Town - It was a funny old Tri-Nations for the Springboks. The Rugby World Cup champions finished bottom of the table with a disappointing two wins from six, and unexpectedly lost two of their three home outings.

Yet both triumphs were pretty sublime ones: merely breaking the Dunedin bogey in a 30-28 thriller was a giddy achievement, while the Boks reserved best for last with an almighty thrashing of the Wallabies in Johannesburg.

Was it a turning point under the coaching tenure of Peter de Villiers or was it simply because Australia were preoccupied by bigger fish to fry?

Nobody is quite sure, but for the meantime, study our Springbok player-by-player barometer for the Tri-Nations campaign, featuring all those who got significant enough game-time.

Rob's backline report card:

8
Jean de Villiers: Playing arguably the rugby of his life. Happily free of injury, handsomely expressed himself in midfield and gave direction and purpose to the entire back division. Orchestrated several tries, too.

7
Adi Jacobs: Perfect foil for De Villiers in his "playing off him" role. Imaginative and elusive in wriggling through gaps, and those who feared he would be a revolving door defensively were startlingly put in their places.

6.5
Conrad Jantjes: Doesn't do everything right; hands let him down in Durban defeat to Australia. But a revealingly resurgent force otherwise - excellent footballing acumen and utterly brave under aerial bombardment.

6.5
Jongi Nokwe: Favourable rating almost entirely based, it is true, on fairytale four-try burst against Wallabies at Coca-Cola Park, mostly "round-offs". But you've still got to do it! Swift and elegant; defence yet to be thoroughly tested.

6
Odwa Ndungane: Probably never going to settle as first-choice right wing because of lack of true pace. Dependable, composed workhorse nevertheless; industrious finale against Wallabies.

6
Bryan Habana: Frustrating that he never sees the ball in space as much as Bok fans would like. Tournament curtailed by injury; fine torpedo-like try first-up in Wellington, though.

6
Percy Montgomery: Swansong tournament for him, much of it off bench. Rich, calming experience and booming boot still assets at times, but those legs certainly getting no faster and a few handling boo-boos.

6
Fourie du Preez: Return from lengthy injury absence meant Tri-Nations home leg was primarily a rust-buster for him. Started tentatively but got better and better, to remind all of 2007 exploits.

6
Ricky Januarie: Combative little dynamo, as ever, even if sometimes still fails to see bigger picture. Who will forget, though, bit of virtuoso genius for All Black-killer try in Dunedin?

6
Ruan Pienaar: Limited opportunity, and versatility perhaps does him no favours. A bit of off-the-bench exposure at flyhalf, though, and lovely swerving try against Australia in Johannesburg. Successor to Butch James at No 10?

5.5
Butch James: Failed to stamp his authority in the No 10 jersey, even though he was given ample opportunity. A few "no-arms" and dangerous tackles went unpunished, asking questions regarding his temperament. Slipped a few of those tackles as well, but more worrying was his positional kicking, which went missing for most of the tournament. One of the players not buying into the coach's plan perhaps?

5
Frans Steyn: Like Pienaar, almost too multi-skilled for own good - but not making desired progress amidst ongoing positional quandary, either. Feeling remains that he occasionally tries too hard to provide the "unusual".

4.5
JP Pietersen: Just for a while, it looked as if form nightmare of early 2008 was over. Started to get more involved and gain confidence, but then rather subsided again. And injury kept him off park in the 53-8 romp.

Tank's pack report card:

9
Tendai Mtawarira: Proof that there is life after the legend that is Os du Randt. Awesomely powerful scrumming that has returned the Bok scrum to the top of the pile, while also making real yards with ball in hand and stopping very big people in their tracks with crunching tackles.

7
CJ van der Linde: A seriously competent tighthead prop who anchors the scrum well, gets the needed right shoulder, adds value in the tight-loose and is effective with ball in hand. Damaged his reputation (and rating) hugely because of his moronic head-butt on Sam Cordingley that led to his four-week suspension.

6
Bismarck du Plessis: A success story in that he made fantastic use of the unfortunate injury to skipper, John Smit. Destructive in the tight-loose, a powerful scrummager, but part of a relatively unhappy lineout and prone to losing the ball in the tackle.

6
Andries Bekker: Very effective in all the home games. Not a Bakkies replacement but then was never meant to be. Probably need a little more from him in the really tough stuff, though, but adds to the Bok lineout and grew in stature with every start.

6
Juan Smith: Along with Schalk, one of only two forwards to start every game. Certainly not quite at his world-dominating best we saw at the World Cup, but monumental at times. On the back foot, given the Boks' poor performance at the breakdown, he was forced into a much tighter role.

6
Pierre Spies: Fair to expect a little more from this great athlete, but improved with every game, eventually showing a little of what he is capable of in the final game. Still questions marks around his effectiveness in the really tight and tough games

5.5
Schalk Burger: Started every game. Unfairly blamed for the ineffectual work at the breakdown by the entire Bok side, the great player seemingly tried to take on a little too much. Monumental in his defence, he certainly made players look up before taking passes.

5
Brian Mujati: After a few "iffy" performances from the bench, provided a more than competent display as part of the run-on XV in the final game. Solid scrummager who does not yet do too much around the field.

5
Bakkies Botha: Part of a lock pairing that really got bullied off the park in the first All Black game, and it is not insignificant that Ali Williams and Brad Thorn were missing from the team the Boks beat. Did not have a chance to redeem himself in the home games but needed more from him as the "enforcer".

4
Gurthro Steenkamp: A primary reason for the Bok scrum coming unstuck in the first game against the All Blacks. Improved greatly in the second game, but having seen what Mtawarira can do, he is now looking to be a prop just short of international standard.

4
Victor Matfield: Very poor Tri-Nations indeed. He was sin-binned for a high tackle that could well have deprived the Boks of their win in New Zealand. Part of lineout that was well below normal Boks standards (losing six of them in Durban Test) and well off his best when taking the all-important kick-ins.

4
Luke Watson: Like a dirty smell, he has tended to hang around in this year's tournament. Replaced Burger with 20 minutes to go at Newlands, and failed to make any impact at all. Never getting a start, he was, in fact, not very influential at all from the bench.

4
Joe van Niekerk: Looked at sea in all three away games. Dropped passes, took tackles when he should have been looking to go wide, and then lost possession in the tackle. Not explosive or decisive enough for an international No 8.

3.5
Schalk Brits: Came on for Du Plessis in the second game and looked to have made an impact, but having started the third game was shown up to go missing in the big games and not offer enough at the collision and breakdown.

Coach:

4.5
Peter de Villiers: His entertainment value at press conferences is second to none, but the jury is definitely still out regarding his ability to take control of some of the best players in the world and get them on a park confident in their ability to take on all comers. Naive in his thinking that the ball can just be spread without doing some hard graft to get into the opposition half, it will be interesting to see if he learns from this wooden spoon performance.

Not rated due to a lack of game time:

Bolla Conradie: Only last few minutes in Wellington
John Smit: Only played in the first half of first game
Adriaan Strauss: Never started. On the bench for the home games
Danie Rossouw: On the bench for two of the home games

Nicely summed up guys. I thought your ratings of the players was quite accurate. I probably would've given the coach a 3 (lost big points for criticizing the refs and some of his other comments), but a good article I thought.
    The Truth 9/4/2008 8:50:23 AM
how many of the poor performances of our proven world class players can be blamed directly on them,or should actually be blamed on their forced execution of an "expEnsive" (in terms of losses) game plan which they seem most uncomfortable with, but have to persist with for fear of being dropped.
    Rugby Fan 9/4/2008 8:52:37 AM
coach should have got 3 due to the fact that he bad mouthed the team after the loss at Newlands ,if you are going to bust the players chops do it in private not in public and as for his biblical rantings -please stop-Tank why are we playing 2 zimbabwean players surely we have enough talent ??????? -Adi Jacobs rating a tad high ,I think if he is tested agianst a Fully Firing All black or Aussie back row he may be found wanting
    Johann 9/4/2008 8:54:15 AM
Most of it I agree with, but surely Adi deserves an 8 or 7.5 with Jantjes getting 7.5! Nokwe should be down at 4 - he really didn't do much except step over the line. I agree we need to do it, but that does not justify scoring the same as Jantjes or 1 less than Adi! Also, Januarie was better than 6 for me, and should've started above Fourie in all the games, Fourie was a 3 to me - utterly useless!
    Dean 9/4/2008 9:08:50 AM
Well done Tank and co, a very true reflection on the players and coach.
    THE PROPHET 9/4/2008 9:10:03 AM
except for Luke watson and juan smit, i'd give luke a 5 and juan a 5 also!
    LPC 9/4/2008 9:24:32 AM
Good article, as I have mentioned many times before I have had to eat my words regarding AD Jacobs - he had a great tri-nations and I was a bid critic before the start of the tri-nations. What I am confused about is Jean de Villiers, I would definately rate him a 9 he was by far the most influential player for the Boks, therefore warranting at least the same rating as the Beast!
    Mike H@ winning form.co,za 9/4/2008 9:32:14 AM
wE OBVIOUSLY HAVE THE PLAYERS TO BEAT THE BEST BUT UNTIL WHOEVER SLECTS THE TEAM IS ALLOWED TO SELECT THE BEST ON FORM OUR TEAM WILL ALWAYS HAVE IT'S UP'S AND DOWNS.
    Mark 9/4/2008 9:34:37 AM
Think that Schalk Burger did way more in 1 match than Juan Smith or Pierre Spies did during the entire Tri-Nations. Problem is that Scalk needs to be our ball contender, but due to the other loose forwards not contributing he has to make more tackles and even carry the ball most of the time. Pierre Spies is a great talent with a great future, but he likes a loose game.
    Boss 9/4/2008 9:37:27 AM
You've rated them pretty closely as to how I saw them. In my view Conrad Jantjes is not a 6.5 but rather a 6, and Ndungane could move from 6 to 6.5 based on his exceptional work rate. JP Pietersen should be the same as Schalk Brits- a 3.5. Pierre Spies is lucky to get 6 as he didn't perform to his usual high standard apart from the last game.
    Stef 9/4/2008 9:38:21 AM
Good synopsis on things - I also think that 4.5 was quite generous for PDV and that 5.5 was too low for Schalk as he is a truly world class player and the final game proved that all 15 need to be aggressive at the breakdown in order for us to win ball on the ground and it is not just up to our no.6...look at how well the Blacks support Richie at the breakdown...Loved the comments on Luke as he had no influence on the Tri - Nations wahatsoever!
    Jakes 9/4/2008 9:49:25 AM
I feel sorry for Schalla Burger in particular: was forced to play too hard, and over-committed at break-downs. Matfield didn't carry his captaincy and player responsibilities well: something like Shaun Pollock, he's a great senior player, but maybe somebody else should have been captain.
    Marcel 9/4/2008 9:50:09 AM
these things are, but I like the reviews, made alot of sense to me. The Beast was the stand out player for me, he really showed he's got what it takes to compete at this level and his work rate was awesome. Maybe out on the wings too much though! And Jean is looking fantastic too. Nice article.
    Crimson 9/4/2008 10:22:12 AM
Good article, Think Steyn will be more utilised with the retirement of Percy. Think Pienaar should be second choice Flyhalve and Steyn be backup Inside Centre as Jean De Villiers is injury prone. The fact that Steyn paris with ADI Jacobs at the Sharks might help his cause.
    Thehman 9/4/2008 10:33:10 AM
Very good ratings and excellentjustifications although I must say that the standout workhorse for me was Odwa Ndungane, he set up alot of tries for us and he was totally unselfish when the time called for it definitley someone we need in the team. But I also agree he is not the stand out right wing, might be interesting to put him in a a foil for Brian Habana they could feed each other as both like to work the whole field
    sandile 9/4/2008 10:41:24 AM
Hey guys thanks for the ratings. However, I think some of the scores are a little high including that of the coach. When broken down it reads: backline scored 79 with an average of (6) and forwards scored 75 with a (5,3)ave. Apart from the last game I do not see how our backline rates so high, only De villiers and Jacobs were consistent performers. Among the forwards only Beast is worth a mention. And as for the coach just like his press conferences he is a JOKE.
    Joe 9/4/2008 10:57:10 AM
Good article, i also think Jean deserves a higher rating. The beast was mesmeric and powerful. Adi Jacobs played quite well also.
    Tank 9/4/2008 11:11:03 AM
Hi RugbyFan - thanks for the comment and question. The fact that we are playing 2 Zimbo props does concern me, and I wrote a column on it a while back. They are both certainly good enough to play. My question, though, was if they were white, would everyone still be happy with the selections. I was told by most people to wind my neck in because we are all Africans. But I would love to see the reaction to two white Zimbos selected to play for SA!
    Tank 9/4/2008 11:16:12 AM
And of the SA props, we would be pretty well served by any of CJ van der Linde, Jannie du Plessis, BJ Botha, Heinke van de Merwe, Jaco Engels, Wian du preez or Deon Carstens. As said, I think Beast and Mujati add huge value to the Bok camp, but how many SA born props will their selections scare away?
    Tim2 9/4/2008 11:31:58 AM
Generally good ratings overall, but I definately think Spies was rated to highly... the 8th mans job is not to hang out on the wing. If Spies wants to play wing then he must, but he is not a true no. 8 by any yardstick. Joe at least gets into the rucks and mauls...
    Not Tank 9/4/2008 11:39:19 AM
CJ was a 3. I do not know what match Tank was watching where CJ got a right shoulder! (Only when the beast decided to step backwards did the scrum sway that way) No - he should not be a bok again. Player of the tournament must be Beast, and second Biz. They were CONSISTENTLY brilliant. Jantjes overrated and one dimentional when compared to Steyn who is the perfect fullback. Schalk was GREAT. He is not a fetcher, rate him for what he is. With locks in backline, loosies are ineffectual. Sorry T
    Zee 9/4/2008 11:40:51 AM
Joe was much better than Spies until the final game. Schalk and Juan were useless in this series, Luke came onto the field and made an instant impact - take ur freaking blinkers off "tank". And Ricky was definitely the better scrummy in this 3N. percy deserves a lower spot in my opinion, this was one of his most shocking series ever. Butch James should retire, and Ruan take over! PDV deserves more, you're clearly with the JW fanatics.
    Filemon 9/4/2008 11:51:44 AM
intelligent rugby responses instead of the normal news24 comments. Hard to rate forwards when they were instructed to play backline rugby which also makes it hard to rate the backline when receiving poor ball. Reverting back from 15 man "7's" style rugby will increase all players ratings. Best new Bok? Adi. He has come far from being an average Bull, worse Falcon and improved Shark. Conrad good on attack, defensive positioning a bit weak. Welcome to the BEEEEAAAASSSSTTT!!!!
    shaka zulu 9/4/2008 12:07:15 PM
Monty is from Namibia no one has complained, they a allegeable for selection. Vickery, Clyde, DV from France and many more are South African born. other countries are doing it why cant we.The AB have a lot of samoa (Jerry Colins, Rodney) and figian born players. Don?t make an issue out of nothing.
    ANSLIN ELBRUG 9/4/2008 12:11:33 PM
IF THE PLAYERS DID LISTEN TO PETER IN FIRST PLACE OR LIKE THEY DID ON SATERDAY THE CAP WAS EASILY WON AND LIKE ASBEEN jake wine maker who phone players to play badly
    Shaun 9/4/2008 12:32:34 PM
Were the best of the season, thats the sort of dedication we need from all our players. i was very impressed with jacobs he really proved most of the critics wrong. we definitely need to find an alternative flyhalf in case butch's form doesn't return.
    Huuuuuuuuuuh 9/4/2008 12:35:33 PM
I would say the most of it was okay..just one or two comments...The loosies should not have been above 4 all of them, there was no stand out, they did not dominate and LUKE did not show, coming on 15 min for the end you bound to be stand out, but he did not do enough. JP Pietersons improvement on the wing compare to Odwa from the first test esp when playing back...was noticable. Beast you legend, Fourie had a shocker series. Beast you legend.
    Shakes 9/4/2008 12:59:50 PM
Spies getting a higher rating than Joe and Luke. Spies butchered 4 tries this season thrucrap handling (any 8 year old has better hands). Vs All Blacks we were in the game until Spies spills a Ricky pass, Blacks took it thru phases and scored. PDV must give Burger, Joe and Watson a starting show then you will see a thing or two. Currently our trio is all brawn no brain. Luke and Joe has the brains for PDV game plan.
    kinetic 9/4/2008 1:35:33 PM
Wow! The last time I checked Bobby Skinstad was Zimbabwean, Corne Krige Zambian, Percy Namibian and that's just recently!
    Hammer 9/4/2008 1:36:34 PM
You okes haven't got the slightest clue what you are talking about. Luke Watson is the crappest loosie that ever got the opportunity to put on the green & gold. If PVD had half a brain he would have called up Wikus van Heerden after our 1st game already. Good Article Tank - Lets see all your crictics write something better......
    Ed 9/4/2008 1:52:50 PM
I share your sentiments on most of ratings. Dearest "captain" Matfield doesn't deserve 4 though. His poorest Tri-Nations ever & captaincy-in a word-pathetic! Lead by example plse. We missed John as captain -Bismark stood his ground well. Look Watson should get a 1.2 - go play with the other little kids. Well done Beast & Jean! Adi & Jantjes way overrated - Adi can't tackle (missed again in last test) & Jantjies can't find find the line.. Coach: this is not kids- its men's careers! Take 1
    SKAR 9/4/2008 2:18:47 PM
The Beast Mtawarira get an extra 1 for the one- handed offload while taking a hit towards the of the game .Thats how you "play the sutuation infront of you". BIG-UPS to PDV!!!Pitty it all came to together Tri Nations the last game,But then again Rome was not built in a day.
dave the brave 9/4/2008 2:26:02 PM
The beast is my new rugby hero!! What a player!! BEAST FOR PRESIDENT!!
dave the brave 9/4/2008 2:29:26 PM
Couldn't agree more! Puke Watson has failed to impress me once. Joe is super over-rated and spies is capable of so much more! Du Preez must sit on the bench and let Ruan start! Adi has had a cracker of a season despite the worries about his defence! Well done..
    Waleed 9/4/2008 2:36:25 PM
Did you forget how many white Zimbo's we had in the Bok make up over the last half centuray. I will not spoil you with the answer go look it up and no one complained. Why is it alwas about colour. Its an new S.A. wollow it yes I hate the fact that the goverment robs us and crime etc but don't take it out on the Zimbo you bimbo. lol
    CDhukka 9/4/2008 2:42:29 PM
Bit harsh on Spies and Bissie there bru!
    Granville 9/4/2008 3:14:35 PM
We had 2 zAmbo white captains. Crige and Skinstad. No onecomplained about that. It wasn't even mentioned. Aus has a bunch of Fijians, the AB's have plenty. What is the problem. Did you complain when Crige and Skinstad were selected for one and then made Captain???
    Granville 9/4/2008 3:20:23 PM
This was the question most people asked at the start of the year. You have seen the answer. lets hope you see the light from now?
