Where Eagles soar

What has happened to the traditional 'Big 3' franchises/provinces in South African cricket: The Cape Cobras/Western Province, the Highveld Lions/Transvaal and the Dolphins/Natal?

In years gone by it was believed that South African cricket could only be strong if these three provinces were strong. Could this possibly be the reason why the Proteas performances have declined in recent years against the top nations of the world, especially Australia?

The worst performing franchise of the 'Big 3' are the Lions. The Lions/Transvaal have never recovered from the halcyon days of the "Mean Machine".

This franchise with its rich tradition and positioning with regards to the South African economy and population density should be the powerhouse of South African cricket. There is no excuse for their lack of performance with all the resources at their disposal.

Inconsistent

The Dolphins who along with Western Province supplied the bulk of the successful South African team during the 1990s are a mere shadow of the great Natal teams of the past. It is alarming to see how far the performances of the Dolphins team have been allowed to slip. The situation needs to be urgently rectified as South African cricket needs a strong Dolphins team.

The Cobras on paper are a strong team, to my mind they have the best squad in domestic cricket. However, they have been too inconsistent in recent years and not done themselves justice. The Western Province teams of old were capable of producing the bulk of the national players and still winning domestic trophies. This squad has the same potential but something is missing.

If South African cricket is to remain world-class and grow, these three franchises with their rich traditions and resources need to play a pivotal role.

Instrumental

The Eagles have easily won the SuperSport Series trophy for the third time in their history. They have also shared the trophy with the Dolphins on one occasion.

Since the inception of franchise cricket in 2004, the Eagles have now won six of the 11 domestic trophies.

There are two people that have been instrumental in turning one of the smallest franchises in the country into the dominant domestic force - namely CEO Johan van Heerden and coach Corrie van Zyl.

Both are true sons of the Free State soil and have a great passion for their province. They both were members of the great Free State teams of the 1980s and 1990s that started the Free State renaissance.

Great passion

Van Heerden is a skilled administrator in all aspects of business related to cricket; from the commercial aspects to the marketing of the game. Like in his playing days he is a true all-rounder in the management of the game.

Van Zyl is the driving force behind the success of the Eagles team. He played the game for Free State and South Africa with great passion and coaches the Eagles in a similar manner. Van Zyl is a highly competent and skilled coach that is driven by success. He is professional in the true sense of the word and has a very high work ethic.

There is little doubt that he is the best coach at franchise level and is also vastly experienced. He also has international experience having been a successful assistant coach to the late Bob Woolmer.

Well noted Arthur. As with any sporting code - success is driven by competence, passion and a deep knowledg of the game by its administrators. Well done to the Free State in both codes - rugby and cricket. Corrie van Zyl is a brilliant coach - and is far and away better equiped, in every aspect, to coach the Proteas. But therein lies the rub - Mickey Arthur is the joke that Smith and the senior clique can 'have their lazy way with'. That's why Ray Jennings had to go - depsite success in the West Indies (the first team at the time to win a series over there in a long time) - he was a disciplinarian - and thus had to go - to be replaced by an incompetent puppet. The Proteas will never - read my lips - NEVER beat Australia with the current coaching set-up, and the continued ignoring of experienced players with BMT, who consistently dominate the SS Series - players like Martin van Jaarsveld. Australia is a team to be admired for the brilliance they bring to the game - on and off the field. Cheers - Nick

I really do think that the BEST franchise would be the Eagles. Over the last few years, they've had brilliant players. Jacques Rudolph, Boeta Dippenaar, Ryan Mclaren, Johan vd Wath. They've got the correct structure inplace and there is no dispute at management level. They've got the correct coaches. I think one of the reasons why the other franchises aren't doing so well, might be the fact that our best players are overseas and they don't get the oppertunity @ national level. Why is a player like Gibbs, Smith (you pick a team and out the pool of players selected, you pick a captain) Philander there? We are drastically losing our top players. Congrats to the Eagles for retaining top players when they can. They pick sides on MERIT not on buddy-buddy system or records from the past.

Vryyyystaaat ! I think that the players both cricket and rugby are more dedicated and loyal and always feel they have something to prove to the BIG BOYS. Clever coaching and inspiration = highly motivated team.

I could'nt agree more to what Nick just commented. The Eagles look like a proud and professional team unlike our veldblomme which are below par to the rest of the world.

Back in the day the Free State had Hansie (the best), Donald, Boje etc. Ya you might say Boje was never great, but he was a fighter. We need to look at the exposure/access youngsters are getting to the game. Abck in the day all test matches and most domestic were broadcasted on SABC. This was when our national teams were at their best. Now kids only get to follow home matches and have to listen to Gareth Flusk and Zolani Bonquo. The same is true for other sporting codes like tennis. Gone are the days of watching all the Grand Slams on SABC and running out to actually playing the game. To get juniors interested in the game we need to make it more accessible to them. They are the ones who are represent us in years to come anyways.

So, its not just me that are puzzled that the Proteas team is about 75% Cape Cobras, while the Eagles are winning almost everything on provincial level. Which begs the question: who did our selectors represent in their playing days?

It tells you that FS Cricket has put the structures in place, appointed the right people and has a disciplined approach to what they do. Congratulations to the Eagles.

Hello Arthur and the gang, Yeah, go Vrystaaaat! They really stick to the basics of the game and the franchise seems to reflect the player's needs rather than the money merchants' who now run the game at the other so called franchises - they should be called businesses! Don't talk about Mickey Arthur - he's a joke even in his own home town, where he is seen as Smith's appointee, come back Ray Jennings, all is forgiven!! By the way, why doesn't Bloem get any Tests anymore? Or One dayers? Go Bokke, or should one say, Proteas!!
