Google's video plans on track
05/04/2005 11:35  - (SA)

  • Google plans storage galore
  • Google tool ready for action
  • Amazon search goes visual
  • Google, Yahoo launch TV search
  • San Francisco - Google is preparing to introduce its video search service, co-founder Larry Page said on Monday.

The company will start taking video submissions soon. Further details will be revealed in the next few days, he said.

"It's an experiment. We're not sure what we're going to get," he told attendees at a cable trade show.

It was not immediately clear what sources the video clips would come from. Google revealed in January that it was developing a service that would allow users to search transcripts of programmes on PBS, Fox and others.

The company has been recording television programmes and cataloguing them since late last year.

Google video plans come amid growing interest in convergence of television and the web.

Among the main themes at this week's cable convention is personalisation of TV viewing. Looking for ways to differentiate from satellite TV providers, cable companies have been looking into ways to make TV more interactive.

At the same time, internet search companies have been under pressure to add more content onto their pages. Yahoo earlier this year said it was planning to expand its video search service.
