Sydney - More than 60 pilot whales has died after stranding themselves at a beach on the Australian island state of Tasmania, officials said on Tuesday.
A Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson said the pod of about 70 pilot whales were spotted at Tasmania's Marion Bay on Tuesday morning but most were dead by the time rescuers arrived at the remote spot.
She said wildlife officers in the area were attempting to help a small number of the marine mammals that had been dragged back into the ocean.
Pilot whales frequently beach themselves on the Australian coast in a phenomenon that remains a mystery to scientists.
