Starving seals wash up on coast
31/10/2006 20:09 - (SA)
Cape Town - Large numbers of seals have been washing up along Cape Peninsula beaches, the SABC reported on Tuesday.
Spokesperson for Seal Alert SA Nikkie Botha said the seal cubs were fleeing Namibia because of clubbing, starvation and weather conditions.
She also said sealers were culling up to 1 000 seals daily for their fur.
Botha said: "When the seals go on to land, they get clubbed to death.
"When they try fleeing in the water, there's no food so the cubs are being separated from their mothers.
"Then they swim thousands of kilometres in search of food.
"By the time they reach our shores, they are either dead or on their way to being dead... and they are starving, injured and absolutely traumatised."
"This is why we are receiving an influx of these cubs washing up on our shores."
