UK govt launches CO2 calculator
20/06/2007 15:18 - (SA)
London - Households can now work out
their carbon footprints with an online calculator, the British
government announced.
The CO2 calculator will work out an individual's or
household's footprint based on the use of energy devices in the
home, domestic appliances and means of transport.
Users are asked a series of questions before being provided
with recommendations on reducing and avoiding energy waste as
well as ways to offset it.
'Cut through confusion'
Environment Secretary David Miliband, who was launching the
scheme, said: "Around two thirds of people are already taking
action to try to limit climate change - but there is a lot of
confusion about what people can do and how effective those
changes actually are. We want to cut through that confusion."
More than 65% of people questioned in a Department
for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs survey said they were
already trying to take personal action to try to limit climate
change.

The CO2 calculator, developed in partnership with the Energy
Saving Trust, can be found at http://www.direct.gov.uk/actonCO2.
On Tuesday, environmentalist Alex Lambie and energy price
comparison service energyhelpline.com launched Greenhelpline.com
which allows users to search for environmentally friendly energy
tariffs.
It hopes to convert 500 000 homes to using electricity
from renewable resources within the next 12 months.
