eNatis database 'secure'
05/07/2007 08:55  - (SA)

  • Hacker hijacks eNatis
  • eNatis hacking 'not a problem'
  • eNatis website hacked
  • e-Natis 'fully operational'
  • eNatis operating 'optimally'

    Cape Town - Worried that your personal details on the eNatis database are out there for the world to see after Wednesday's hacker attack?

    Don't be, a report on the eNatis website says.

    On Thursday, the eNatis website was up and running, no sign of a blank screen or hacker messages.

    According to the website, the eNatis system and database are still secure and cannot be accessed via the website.

    The website is apparently running on a public hosting area and is not connected to the eNatis data centre at all.

    On Wednesday, News24 received several messages from users saying that a hacker has gained access to a section of the website.

    Initially it was just the "How Do I" link that had been hacked, but by Wednesday evening the whole site was taken over, displaying the message:

    HACKED BY ÏSTANBULLS

    TURKÏSH HACKER

    TÜRK HACKER

    When told about the hacking on Wednesday, Transport Department spokesperson Collen Msibi reportedly said it was nothing to write home about and that it wouldn't affect the functioning of the system.

    Last month Beeld newspaper revealed findings from a confidential auditor-general report about eNatis.

    It revealed that:

  • it is possible to hack into eNatis;
  • one does not need a password to log on as an eNatis administrator;
  • documents on eNatis are not secured.

    The controversial eNatis system saw numerous breakdowns since going live in April, raising the ire of motorists who braved lengthy queues at traffic departments in trying to renew their drivers' licences or registering vehicles.
