Cape Town - Nintendo's much-anticipated Wii gaming console has gone on sale in South Africa.
Spokesperson Megan Richardson told News24 there was a phenomenal response to the popular console at this weekend's rAge computer, gaming and technology expo held at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate.
"We had in the region of about 20 000 visitors who had a great response to the unit. Lots of stiff people I'm sure this morning as people were giving it stick on the Wii sport games - a few up and coming Wimbeldon champs were spotted."
The Wii is priced at R2 899, and comes with a Wii sports game pack, a Wii-mote, and a nunchuck. A full list of stockists can be found on www.nintendo.co.za.
Nintendo's Wii was launched overseas in November 2006, but had no distributor in South Africa.
With no Nintendo dealer in South Africa, the only way gamers could get their hands on Nintendo products was through costly importing.
Earlier this month local company Core Group was confirmed as the new South African distributor for Nintendo. The products were formerly distributed here by Futronics, a division of Panasonic.
The Wii has been a consistent best-seller since its launch, beating Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360.
