SMS spammers to be exposed

2008-02-20 12:05

Cape Town - Tired of SMS spam? A new local website will give users a chance to name and shame SMS spammers.

Stopsms.co.za will be similar to the hellkom or hellopeter websites, said Frank Kistler, who will be running the site.

Kistler told News24 he decided something needed to be done to get people to comply with SMS rules.

New regulations in effect from August last year make it compulsory for companies sending SMS messages within South Africa to offer consumers a way of opting out from receiving unsolicited commercial SMSs by replying with the word "stop" from their phone.

The regulation was introduced by the Wireless Application Service Providers Association (Waspa) and accepted by the South African SMS-messaging industry.

However, stopsms.co.za will be taking things further.

Asked if he thinks the current SMS spam regulation is working properly, Kistler commented: "It might if everyone does their best to stop it... but exposure will tell the tales."

The site plans to expose companies that abuse the SMS system and will also highlight loopholes that actually promote spamming, Kistler said.

"We will report any reported SMS spam/loophole listed on our website to the highest governing body of the service provider and communicate online cases that where reported to the various companies but we will not be involved with lawyers or cases.

"We will give companies the opportunity to list their comments as well," he added.

Stopsms.co.za will go live in "the next two weeks or so", said Kistler.

Mostly people DO have an option of opting out, but these spammers charge you for the opt out sms. Also according to the ECT act, these spammers MUST inform you where they got your contact details from!

How right you are Juan - why should I have to pay R3 (at least) to opt out of a "service" I never signed up for. I do not give my personal details out on any web services, ie competitions, facebook, mailboxes etc, so how do these spammers get my info? I was called once by a salesperson in NEW ZEALAND who was calling ppl off a mailing list for a company in SA. I eventually got it out of him that he got my details from EDGARS! Where did I give permission for that? Stop Spam!

I've found that most of my spam originates from Edgars. I always ask where they got my numbers from, and 90% of the time it's from Edgars

Now if there was only an opt-out option for 'Cash in a Flash'. Anyone who has got a call from the recorded voice will know what I'm talking about. No point in asking the consultant to remove you from the list. They just dont do it. They'll become your worst nightmare. Also registering on the DMA website does not stop them either. http://www.facilities.co.za/dma/dnc.aspx

Motor Finance Corp keep giving my details to AIG, which then phone and SMS me. Sometimes up to 3 times per day.

Even with the "STOP" option, it still costs me money to de-activate spam - making the Cellular companies the winner no matter what happens. This is not restricted to SMS only and I get calls from every angle trying to sell anything from life insurance to credit cards. My number is my unique identifier and I don't want it to be distributed. This needs regulating and I absolutely welcome this new initiative. Way to go Frank Kistler!!!

Anyone have complaints about Standard Bank?

On my current sms hate list: Budget insurance Metropolitan Life

Due to public demand we will have it up Friday the 22nd of February 2008.

Yes, Charlie! A group of 4 colleagues used my PO Box number for our volunteer group's FICA requirements at Standard Bank. There is no other connection between us. Now they are all getting junk snail mail from various places through my post box. Standard Bank however swears that they don't sell address lists - HUH!
