Desktops minus Microsoft

San Francisco - International Business Machines Corp, Novell Inc and distributor Avnet Inc, seeking to capitalise on resistance to Microsoft Corp's dominance of the desktop software market, on Tuesday launched a software bundle for UK desktop users designed to allow customers to skip Microsoft products.

The so-called IBM Open Collaboration Solution uses open document format, or ODF-based software, running on Suse Linux, a version of the Linux open-source operating system software owned by Novell.

IBM claims the software bundle, which will be distributed by Avnet and sold by three integration and consultancy partners, will be the first enterprise-scale software package designed to allow business customers to skip Microsoft products altogether.

The initiative arrives amid growing interest among mainstream computer hardware and software manufacturers in providing computing solutions that don't require Microsoft software. There has also been discontent over the software giant's large market share, and complaints about the performance of its most recent operating system, Vista.

Last month, computer maker Dell Inc, a long-term partner of Microsoft, launched PCs that embed the Linux operating system.

The sales pitch is designed to emphasise that customers can make cost savings by running computers without Microsoft software, and also to tap into fears that Microsoft's monopoly of the desktop computing and office tools market gives it control over IT spending, IBM said.

"An awful lot of the spending dollars available to customers is currently going to desktop software," Doug Heintzman, director of strategy for IBM collaboration, said. IBM says it isn't charging for the software it provides, though Novell makes money from licensing.

Heintzman said IBM estimates that a customer can save between $600 and $800 per computer compared with using the Microsoft Vista operating system and Office productivity tools, such as word processing and spreadsheet applications on similar hardware.

IBM, Novell and Avnet are working with consultancy and systems integration partners Erebor, Conexus and BasicTM, to sell the systems in the UK.

Heintzman said similar solutions had already been launched in Eastern Europe and added that IBM would consider launching a non-Microsoft software bundle in the US and elsewhere.

IBM estimates that the desktop Linux market is currently worth around four billion dollars. Microsoft's Windows has a market share of over 90% of the desktop computer operating system market.

What about software developers such as myself, who use Microsoft Software to earn a living. Linux still hasn't provided a viable alternative to M$ Visual Studio.Net. Even a lot of 'ordinary' desktop users are faced with one problem - namely their internet service provider's unwillingness to provide Linux drivers for common broadband modems. If those 2 issues could be effectively addressed, I'd move over to Linux :)

maybe if you knew anything about linux you would change your mind, why would any linux based OS want to have a development suite based on Microsoft rubbish...

Have loaded Linux at home (not ready to do at business) & tried to get all peripherals to work. Mostly unsuccessful. The common problem seems to be drivers. Also, after connecting (was a major strugle) to the web, most of the downloaded data appears to be corrupted or non-functional. Apps based on JAVA seemed OK, but those apps using .NET did not work. Many of my older software utilities (Config / monitoring / system maint / etc...) also failed. If these problems are resolved I will switch.

Linux is horrible in terms of usability, configuration, hardware support and software support. No one will convince me that Linux is the next big thing on desktop machines. I'm a die hard an d slightly biased Microsoft Developer and I'll never bow down before the silly penguin/chameleon/hat/whatever. Linux is generally cheap/free, so I guess you get what you pay for, but you'll make up for the savings in support costs.

Andre I suggest that you cross train. Visual Studio.Net is not the be-all and end-all. It is aimed at Microsoft environments only...What exactly does it do for Unix/Linux? There are many development environments available for Linux. Lift your head above the Microsoft parapet and have a look at what is available in the open-source world. If you can't find what you need, then why not collaborate with the open source community and help to develop it?

There are a lot more MAC vendors than you think, i have been running mac now for two years on "windows" environments without having to sacrifice anything ... KDE has also done some good stuff though, exciting times!!!

It would be nice to have a tighter coupling of the Linux shell within Microsoft so as to get the best of both worlds. I have been a MS fan since DOS but have also contributed to Linux 0.98 and feel that the old Unix world still has a part to play if it were not drowned out by MS. How about the pretty face of MS combined with theb flexibility of Linux ?

I have switched from Vista ( YUK ) to apple when vista came out. I will not look back, have Eclipse IDE (Free) running on OS X and have access to all tools i need to develop what i need. No blue screen yet i might add.

I have to agree with Andre here, i'm a developer myself and have checked a coupla open source development platforms, and none is as feature rich as VS.Net yet.

Slightly biased? No, you are clearly misinformed and not up to date with the Linux desktop environment. You perpetuate the idea that Microsoft is worth the money you pay, in order to protect a market in which you are skilled. Microsoft has been convicted all over the world for its monopolistic practices. Vista is a disaster. Do yourself a favor and install Ubuntu. It will be the best upgrade you ever NOT spent your money on.

In 1996 when I was still a serious FreeBSD user and Perl developer all the anti Windows users out there (including me) were screaming down with Windows. Predictions then were that Linux Red Hat was "Supposed" to have taken over the Desktop market by now. It didn't happen and it will not happen in the near future. Windows do have many bugs! But it is better and more user friendly then ANY desktop OS out there. Accept it buddies.

1) Linux is much further advanced than 5 years ago, but it's not a silver bullet 2) Windows is not as unstable as the Linux fraternity would have us believe, but it is still buggy 3) MacOS X is NOT bulletproof, but at least you're believing a cooler lie than the Vsta users... 4) having said that, I think Linux rocks. 5) Question @ the MacDudes: have you figured out yet how to uninstall the superiority complex that comes pre-installed on your MacPC's?
